Claim Jumper Widow Maker Burger
My second episode was a lot of fun and making the Claim Jumper Widow Maker Burger was quite simple and I’m sure whether you’re single or serving a large family will have lots of fun as well.
The real key to making a good hamburger is that you start with a good quality ground beef from a local butcher that you trust. Make sure its fresh, cold and more reddish in color and bring it home and get it in the fridge until you’re ready to cook it.
The beef is the foundation of a burger and I really like to use a 80/20 mix, which means that its’ 80% lean mean with about 20% fat and this makes a much juicier and tasty hamburger with flavors that jump off the plate. Fat is Flavor.
The real key with working with ground beef and having a juicy burger is to not over-handle it. Try to avoid overworking it with your hands because the heat from your hands melts the fat and this makes for a dull and dry burger. Also, if you plan on adding any other ingredients to your burger make sure they are cold as well.
Trying using a spoon to mix the ground beef with any other ingredients that you use. In the case of the Widow Maker Burger we didn’t add any other ingredients. Shape the ground beef into a round ball using the palms of both hands. Next place between two sheets of wax paper and flatten by applying pressure with a plate. Don’t strive for a perfectly round burger (remember no over handling). Once the meat is on the grill – Let the Grill Do The Work! Don’t press down on the burger with a spatula as this will again make for a very dry burger.
I grilled my patty on an outdoors grill because I love the open-flame grilled flavors coming through. I also grilled my hamburger buns because a toasted bun prevents it from being soggy and with all the ingredients that this recipe called for I wanted make sure my buns would hold up to the challenge.
The Claims Jumper Widow Maker Burger is no small burger – it’s a half pound in size so it’s probably not for finicky eaters or those with small appetites. Once I bit into this juicy burger the first thing that jumped out at me was the taste of the relish. It added just a little bit of sweetness which I particularly enjoyed. This was the first time I’ve put relish on a burger but It was divine. I might add it was one of the best burgers that I’ve had in a long time Most times when I order burgers out I add guacamole so while this was not anything new combined with all the other ingredients really gave it a distinctive taste.
Note: Keep in mind to prepare this meal I purchased a pound of meat, package of 8 buns, 6 slices of cheese, one tomato, jar of relish, head of lettuce, package of bacon, bag of frozen onion rings, avocado. Tomato prices at the time writing are extremely high -$2,89 lb. So I just divided my total cost to figure out the cost for one serving. Some of the ingredients like mustard, mayo, salt and pepper I already had on hand.
Serves: 1 big eater
Challenges: No real challenges here because I’ve had years of working at restaurants cooking burgers. The only real challenge (if you could call this one) is actually getting my mouth around this baby to take a bite!
